Is Satan Captive
Eph 4:8 Therefore He says:
“When He ascended on high,
He led captivity captive,
And gave gifts to men.”
More confusion has existed over this verse than possibly any other in the entire Holy Scriptures.
By not understanding the full meaning of Paul’s quoting from Psalm 68:18 our whole eschatological timetable is thrown out of kilter…
Psalm 68:18 You have ascended on high,
You have led captivity captive;
You have received gifts among men,
I have heard arguments for and against these ‘captives’ being souls in Hades, or demons or even Satan himself …after prayerful consideration, I side with John Wesley on this issue…
Wesley’s Notes 4:8 Wherefore he saith – That is, in reference to which God saith by David, Having ascended on high, he led captivity captive – He triumphed over all his enemies, Satan, sin, and death, which had before enslaved all the world: alluding to the custom of ancient conquerors, who led those they had conquered in chains after them. And, as they also used to give donatives to the people, at their return from victory, so he gave gifts to men – Both the ordinary and extraordinary gifts of the Spirit. Psa 68:18.
Satan was led captive by Jesus into the heavenlies where he remains today as the accuser of the Brethren until he is cast down by God RV 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.
Note here with grave foreboding that Satan will again be released upon this earth…he will be cast down once again …RV 12:12 “Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”
A time is coming when ‘all hell’ will break loose upon this earth… a time prophesied by our Savior…Matt24:15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (whoever reads, let him understand),
24:16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
24:17 “Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house.
24:18 “And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes.
24:19 “But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!
24:20 “And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath.
24:21 “For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be.
And then God will step in to stop Satan with His awesome wrath!!!!
24:22 “And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened.
For those of you who assume that Satan still has free reign over this earth, then brace yourself for the coming back to earth of it’s greatest enemy …but stand fast because you who believe on the Lord Jesus Christ share in the victory over Satan and his demons…LK 10:17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
There will of course be those who say that Satan is upon this earth right now because of the words of Peter…1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. But we must understand that Peter is talking here of those who will be alive when the Lord (The Chief Shepherd) returns. In fact Peter gives us a window in time of how it will be on earth during this time of great tribulation and how God will in fact protect us…
JMS 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
