I am of the persuasion that if one has not fully studied the wisdom found in the book of Hebrews in Holy Scripture, one’s ability to reconcile OT with NT will be greatly hindered…
Let us consider Melchizedec; a great king and priest, and a ‘type’ of Christ Jesus.
Heb 7:1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,
When Abraham returned victorious, after having defeated Chedorlaomer and his three allied Kings, and having rescued his cousin Lot; Melchizedek receives him with bread and wine and blesses him…
7:2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated “king of righteousness,” and then also king of Salem, meaning “king of peace,”
Please note the qualities and credentials of Melchizedek…He was a King…He was a Priest…He was “king of righteousness,” and He was “king of peace,”
He was king of Salem, or as is known today, Jerusalem. Abraham gave him one tenth of all the booty he had recovered.
7:3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually.
He had no father nor mother and consequently no genealogy …but was made like the Son of God,
7:4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils.
Melchizedec must have been a very great man for Abraham to have just given one tenth of his booty…Abraham gave of his own freewill…
7:5 And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham;
Tithes of one tenth would in the future be given to the priesthood of the sons of Levi, according to the law which was not yet established i.e. from the people of promise only…from the descendants of Abraham…the Law being given to Moses who was still to come !!!!
7:6 but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
Note with very keen interest that Melchizedek had no genealogy so could not qualify as a Levitical priest, being not from the tribe of Levi…that tribe had yet to be born…Yet Abraham gave tithe to him of 10% recognizing that he was a great man, priest and king.
7:11 Therefore, if perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be called according to the order of Aaron?
Here the writer of Hebrews is explaining in retrospect; that if there was perfection in the Levitical priesthood through whom they receive the law…why is it necessary to have another priest (i.e. Christ Jesus) to arise according to the order of Melchizedek?…
7:12 For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there is also a change of the law
Now this is where the rubber hits the tar; and smoke start rising in the Christian/Jewish world…If there was a change in priesthood then the law must change as well.
We all accept that Jesus is our new High priest and is coming as King of kings…but there is one problem here, Jesus is from the tribe of kings …the tribe of Judah not the tribe of Levi; the tribe of the priesthood ….SO IT STANDS TO REASON THAT THE LAWS MUST CHANGE !!!
7:13 For He of whom these things are spoken belongs to another tribe, from which no man has officiated at the altar.
7:14 For it is evident that our Lord arose from Judah, of which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.
And here it is; Jesus…is not a Levite, but a Judean.
7:15 And it is yet far more evident if, in the likeness of Melchizedek, there arises another priest
Here comes the real Priest and King …Christ Jesus
7:16 who has come, not according to the law of a fleshly commandment, but according to the power of an endless life.
7:17 For He testifies:
“You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4)
PS 110:4 The LORD has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.”
7:18 For on the one hand there is an annulling of the former commandment because of its weakness and unprofitableness,
7:19 for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
7:20 And inasmuch as He was not made priest without an oath
7:21 (for they have become priests without an oath, but He with an oath by Him who said to Him:
“The LORD has sworn
And will not relent,
‘You are a priest forever
According to the order of Melchizedek’ “), (Psalm 14:4)
Jesus is our Priest now of the order of Melchizedec
7:22 by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant
And with this new Priest and King comes a better covenant …The New Covenant…which REPLACES all other covenants…
7:23 Also there were many priests, because they were prevented by death from continuing.
7:24 But He, because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood
There is only one EVERLASTING high priest and king…Christ Jesus…
7:25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.
Only Christ Jesus has these qualities
7:26 For such a High Priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens;
7:27 who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself
Jesus was the sacrificial Lamb upon the cross of Calvary…Once for all…there is no need of any other sacrifice…
7:28 For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness, but the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints the Son who has been perfected forever.
HEB 8:13 In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
Today we have only one covenant and that is the NEW COVENANT in the blood of Jesus Christ…Hear the words of Christ Jesus Himself MT 26:28 “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. We are no longer subject to the law…there is now one universal law in Christ Jesus … MK 12:33 “And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
Those Hebrews realised that all the covenants had been fulfilled in Christ Jesus; and they were no longer looking for a promise of land for themselves, (as is taught today that the present day Israel is God’s promise to the Jews there) …but the Hebrews were looking foreword to a HEAVENLY COUNTRY… HEB 11:16 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. And the heavenly country/city for which they all looked forward is the Holy City …the New Jerusalem… RV 3:12 “He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. And I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name.
JN 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
There is no better time than right now to spread the Gospel; why not do it?
